This was a response from a discussion of Mockingbird’s latest post, where, on Facebook, he asked me to comment.
Once I got started, I had trouble stopping.
I am convinced that everything Marty Rathbun has done since he left the Church of Scientology was to:
- Expose David Miscavige and the abuses within the organization
- Then, after waking up from Scientology itself, expose the abuses inherent in the tech, and the fake life of L Ron Hubbard
- Write about things that have helped him get out of the Scientology mindset so others might benefit from them, too.
- Through interviews, newspaper articles, and participating in TV shows and Hollywood documentaries, attempt to inoculate the society against the spread of Scientology.
- Challenge the Church of Scientology’s ability to fair game critics in court so as to defang them legally.
The charge that Marty Rathbun tries to hold himself up as a “guru” to others could be leveled at you, too, Mockingbird, for running your blog and writing posts about the things that helped you so that others leaving Scientology can be helped. But it would not be true, and it is not true for Marty, either.
I was one of Marty Rathbun’s most dominant critics when he and Mike Rinder were Indies and there were so many people leaving the Church of Scientology and landing on his blog. For me, as a critic of L Ron Hubbard and his Tech, Marty’s Blog was a target-rich environment, filled with Scientologists stuck in the Scientology mindset. And so by criticizing Marty and Mike, and LRon and the tech, right there in their own backyard, I felt I could insert ideas and questions into their conversations that could get a lot of those Scientologists thinking for themselves again.
I was relentless, and I spent years doing it. Marty and Mike and Karen and Mike Laws, using all their years of training in OSA and RTC on handling external “enemies”, formed Indy OSA to get rid of their critics from the Internet. Many Ops were launched in an attempt to silence me and others, mostly from ESMB, which didn’t silence anyone, and which Marty and Karen both have now admitted to. But then Karen’s son died, and that changed everything. Karen announced from Marty’s blog that they would no longer attack critics of Scientology.
Life became much easier for me after that.
Within a year from that time, Marty began criticizing L Ron Hubbard and the tech itself. This lost Marty a lot of friends in the Indie community. But it was clear to me that Marty did not care. Marty was interested in the truth as he saw it, and that is what he wrote about.
It is clear to me that this is what Marty has always written about.
I saw clearly that Marty had changed, and that he had come up out of the Scientology mindset just like everyone else does who has been brainwashed by Scientology.
Then Monique launched her court case against Scientology. And so I began offering Marty my help, in any way I could. Out of no where, Tony Ortega contacted me by email and called me “obsequious” for doing that. I had to look that word up in a dictionary before I told Tony that Marty had changed. Tony, never having been involved in Scientology and having infinite contempt for it and any other spiritual pursuit, scoffed and displayed his not insubstantial arrogance over the thought that there might be something he missed about the inner subtleties of Scientology culture and how Scientologists can change after getting out.
Marty Rathbun is now arguably one of the most effective critics of David Miscavige, Scientology, the Tech and L Ron Hubbard that has ever existed. The idea that he is holding himself up as a “guru” to others is not credible. If Tony Ortega says this, and his Underground Bunkerites parrot it, it is because Tony Ortega believes that all spirituality and “higher states” of being are bullshit, and he has utter contempt for all of it. This, I believe, is the greatest liability for an Ex-Scientologist who follows Tony Ortega’s blog every day and takes on – knowingly or unknowingly – his disgust and contempt for all things Scientology and spirituality.
Yes, Marty Rathbun seems to suffer from a form of Internet Asperger’s where people on the Internet seem less than 3 dimensional to him, and he acts to them accordingly. For that reason, his reputation as an arrogant asshole was created totally by himself.
But talk to the guy in real life, and that walled-off arrogance does not exist. Marty has pissed off a lot of people, and has a huge ego – as we all do from time to time. But the idea that Marty is trying to be someone’s “guru” by writing what he writes on his blog is only a spin by people who are retarded when it comes to spiritual ideas and pursuits.
Marty Rathbun is as flawed as any one of us. And no one has been a bigger critic of him than I have been. But Marty Rathbun has achieved as much or more than any other critic of Scientology in its entire history – going all the way back to Joseph Winter.
While Tony Ortega is also a highly accomplished critic of Scientology, his recent take-down of Marty and Monique Rathbun has been misguided in my opinion, to say the least. His pinheaded spin of their filings to the court has at least brought more confusion than clarity to their position, and at most made him a biased and obsequious mouthpiece for their former lawyers.
Back before the dominance of blogs, there used to be many voices of many critics as contributors to message boards. We don’t have that as much as we used to have, going all the way back to the ARS days.
The group of Old Guard Ex-Scientologists who influenced me such as Gerry Armstrong, Stacy Brooks, Vaughn Young, Jesse Prince, Larry Wollersheim, Dennis Ehrlich, Arnie Lerma, and Tory Christman who all saw the Internet and realized that they could not be stopped in an asymmetrical war to expose Scientology’s criminality and abuse, and to inoculate the society against them, have won.
Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder, who used to do everything in their power to silence and destroy all those people above, have now come out of Scientology and done everything they could do to ALSO take down Scientology.
You have to let that sink in.
Scientology is FULLY dead now, fully discredited. And will never rise again.
The point is that anyone who ever did anything to expose Scientology, from telling their stories on the Internet or in media interviews, to protesting their orgs, to actually suing them in court, have all contributed to the take down of the Church of Scientology and exposing the insidious mind control and abuse that comes from the technology of L Ron Hubbard.
Marty Rathbun has done ALL OF THE ABOVE. And while it is impossible to do something like this gracefully at all times, Marty Rathbun has done it pretty damn effectively.
