The Beatles ‘Across the Universe’ – Ideological Stuckness & the Human Condition

I know no work of art more devoted to a human’s ability to block out the real world in favor of his own internal worldview.

Forget money – this might be the root of all evil.

But it’s also, surely, the source of so much human beauty.

Which is it?

Don’t lull yourself into believing that your own ideology is immune:

Christianity, Judaism, Atheism, Buddhism, Scientology, Communism, Capitalism, Republicanism, Democratism, Toryism and Laborism – all have a similar lulling mantra to drown out the world and to keep it from challenging your existing beliefs.

Whatever your ideology is, just think about it a little bit, and you’ll find it.

All ideologies follow the rule:

Our ideology MUST be true
– especially when it’s not.

So without going too deeply into the nature of ideologies, I’m just going to play some beautiful and lulling mantras that artists have used over the years to sooth us from the real, infinitely variable, and intolerably chaotic universe.

Bliss out, y’all.

NOTE: The refrain “Jai Guru Deva Om” is a Hindu mantra intended to lull the mind into a “higher” consciousness. The words are in Sanskrit, and they mean “I give thanks to Guru Dev,” who was the teacher of The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi – the founder of the Hindu tradition of Transcendental Meditation in America, and a guru the Beatles studied under in the late 1960’s and 1970’s.

The Lyrics
Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru deva, om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letterbox they
They tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe

Jai guru deva, om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life are ringing
Through my open ears inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Jai guru deva, om
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world
Nothing’s gonna change my world

Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva
